Sindh government is understood to be considering a proposal to establish courts for the protection of rights of consumers of essential items. The Department of Law is preparing a working paper. If the proposal goes through, there will be a legislation.
These courts will deal with the offences of adulteration, hoarding, violation in quality of goods, profiteering, sale of substandard goods etc.
Initially, the courts will be set up in Karachi. After some time, the network may be extended to other parts of the province. It is for the first time in Pakistan that the rights of the consumers are being looked after by the government.
It is also proposed that special committees will be appointed to conduct survey of essential items in all leading markets of Karachi.
