The 80 percent work of laying water supply lines from North East Karachi filter plant to Taeesar town, a settlement for the rehabilitation of affected persons of Lyari Expressway, has been completed. The length of 24" wide with 18" diameter pipeline so far laid is 24000ft. The construction of pillars for the pipeline passing through low-lying areas would be completed by September 15 next.
Project Director, Lyari Expressway gave this information to Asif Shaikh, Chief Planning and Development Division, Islamabad on Sunday.
Shaikh, who is here for monitoring of the project, visited the sites along Hub river road, Surjani town, Site, Baldia town etc where the resettlement of affected families is underway.
He was told that so far 14,037 families had been given allotment orders and the first phase of rehabilitation work launched two years back was nearing to completion at Hawks Bay. The number of plots at Hawks Bay site is 4,909 of which 4,700 were allotted to displaced families.
The second phase of rehabilitation is underway at Taeesar town where a 80sq yd plot and Rs 50,000/- have been given each to over 9,500 families.
In Taeesar town, 6,500 families have built their homes and were living normal life there while remaining families were also engaged in building their houses.
It was further told that hawkers' bazaar and shopping centers have also been built to provide job opportunities to the people.
For provision of education, 13 schools were functioning in these settlements while eight more schools are planned to start functioning from new academic session.
The children are provided free textbooks and uniforms and teachers have also been appointed from these localities who are paid honorarium. The vocational training centers have also been opened in collaboration with Baitul Mall where free training is provided to the girls.
The officials further told that third phase of rehabilitation would soon begin at Baldia town and the development at this site would be completed in next two months.
The work on grid station, primary school, mini civic center and dispensary has already been completed.
