Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has observed that the Apex Court has the reports that convicts belonging to upper and rich classes live in jails as "kings," as they are provided modern facilities like "lap tops," "internet," mobile phones etc which defeats the very purpose of keeping the convicts or under-trial prisoners in jails.
The Chief Justice was hearing a human rights case of one Allah Ditta of district Sheikhupura who had contended that a police inspector named Javed Ahmed Qureshi had adopted her 6-year daughter Neelam on fictitious claim of being issueless, but forced the child to work as servant in his house.
He further stated that when he tried to meet her daughter, the said police officer told him that Neelam had run away from his house, without leaving a trace of her whereabouts but Javed's friends had been offering him up to Rs 500,000 if he did not pursue her recovery.
He further submitted that despite orders of the Apex Court, the local police did not make serious action and the accused continued to enjoy all facilities even on being 14 day's judicial remand.
DPO Sheikhupura Dr Shafiq submitted a progress report of the case and said the accused police inspector has admitted that Neelam was with his family and she ran away from his house.
He said the accused was in jail and police was investigating the case. The court expressed dissatisfaction over the report and directed the police to take this case as a challenge and submit a positive report about the recovery of the girl on December 22.
