Karachi City government Nazim Mustafa Kamal has said that Karachi City District Government (CDGK) had undertaken various water and sewerage projects worth Rs 14 billion in all parts of the metropolis.
Talking to a delegation of Asian Development Bank (ADB) which called on him on Friday night to discuss the matters related to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), he apprised the delegation members that the projects also contained replacement and laying of old sewerage and water pipelines.
He said the CDGK was also taking measures for strengthening of KWSB to generate revenue resources as being the sole institution to supply water to 18 million people per day in the city despite some of its technical faults and shortcomings. He said that majority of its 'customers' were not on the tax paying list of KWSB.
He said that the incumbent CDGK has taken steps to introduce monthly water billing system and KWSB has started bills distribution to around 1.1 million consumers, which has helped in increasing its revenue by over 70 percent.
Mustafa also announced that a new tax collection policy would be introduced from next month, which would aim to increase KWSB revenue through enlisting consumers on tax net.
