Igor Kostin (Moldova, 1936) worked for 20 years as an industrial designer before becoming a photograper. He started his photographic career as a photographer for fashion magazines. In 1974, Kostin became a special photo correspondent for RIA Novosti in Ukraine.

Summer. Emergency measures in the Chernobyl area, from which 135,000 inhabitants had to be evacuated. In April, experiments at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused an accident which killed approximately 30 people this year and spread radioactive debris over much of northern and eastern Europe.
