Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) Punjab Zone Chairman Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf on Friday blamed the government for delaying paying sugarcane growers because he claimed the latter government had interfered in the open sugar market.
Ashraf claimed the government had put sugar industry in trouble by dumping subsidised imported sugar in the country and chances of industry's recovery were bleak if the government continued interfering.
He said the industry had millions of people and the industry was contributing Rs 25 billion to the national exchequer, adding that the government had spoiled the industry by offering a Rs 18 billion subsidy and that the heavy stocks of sugar were now stuck up with the sugar mills. He said he hoped the government would better the current environment for the industry's growth and the growers.-PR
