Former (Wapda) chairman Tariq Hamid has said that the authority could be further valued for its contribution in the national development if it comes up to the expectations of its consumers. He said this, while addressing a farewell function arranged in his honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Hamid said that the performance of any organisation was gauged by the level of consumers' satisfaction, adding that Wapda, with more than 17 million consumers on its power system, can meet the challenge with a sense of responsibility and national service.
Talking about the achievements during his tenure he aid that credit should not be attributed to single one because nothing can be achieved without dedicated teamwork and these were the outcomes of good and well-organised teamwork. He also thanked the members and senior officers for their support and assistance in discharging his duties as Chairman for almost four years,
Giving tribute to him water member Muhammad Mushtaq Chaudhry, paid homage to the vision and leadership of Tariq Hamid, said Wapda won many laurels in his tenure. Highlighting the achievements, he said that the completion of Mirani and Sabakzal dams in Balochistan only became possible owing to his keen interest in the development projects, Mangia Dam Raising as well as first phases of Greater Thai, Kachhi and Rainee canal projects were at the advance stages of execution and expected to be completed in the year 2008.
He added initiation of the feasibility studies and preparation of detailed engineering designs of 11 mega hydropower projects with an accumulative generation capacity of about 12,000 MW was yet another achievement of Tariq Hamid.
Further, he said strengthening of transmission system, provision of electricity to 44,000 villages, 52,000 agricultural tube-wells, increase in revenue of Wapda from Rs 198 billion to Rs 275 billion and decrease of system losses from 24.4% to 21.5% during 2003-07 are the other hallmarks that Wapda earned in his stewardship. Members presented souvenirs to Hamid as memento of his chairmanship.
