Chairperson Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto has vowed that her party would form the government after the January 8 elections. Addressing a public meeting at Gama Stadium here, she said a PPP government would re-launch all such mega development projects that were initiated during the party's governments in the past.
The previous PPP governments, she said, had initiated these projects to provide maximum facilities to the masses at their doorsteps, but these people-oriented projects were either withdrawn or suspended. She said the party firmly believed in serving the masses and providing them with all basic facilities.
Benazir said the launch of nuclear programme for strong defence of the country, establishment of Steel Mills and Heavy Mechanical Complex and projects for improvement of socio-economic condition of the poor and provision of free education at primary level were the achievements of the government of late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
The PPP chairperson said during her first and second tenures, the PPP governments strived hard for the uplift of the remote areas and improvement of the socio-economic conditions of the people.
She said the introduction of missile technology, establishment of power plants, foundation of Multan Oil Refinery, initiation of Makran Coastal Highway and grant of permission for opening of television and radio channels in private sector were to the credit of PPP governments.
The PPP leader said the party's government had also made plans for utilisation of Thar coal reserves, seaports at Keti Bandar and Gwadar and power plants besides providing jobs to 0.1 million primary and secondary school teachers, opening 50 thousand primary and secondary schools and providing telephone, electric and gas facilities to various parts of the country.
PPP, she said, represents the common people and has deep roots among them because of its policies. The party always struggled for the rights of the people and restoration of democracy in the country.
Repeating apprehensions of rigging in the coming general elections, Benazir Bhutto pointed finger at "those elements who do not want welfare of the common people."
The PPP chairperson said President Pervez Musharraf has fulfilled his commitments and he should also ensure his promise of conducting elections in a free, fair and transparent manner is fulfilled.
PPP Chairperson on the occasion announced the names of party candidates contesting elections on eight National and 17 Provincial Assembly seats of Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar and Sanghar districts and called upon the voters to exercise their right of franchise in their favour so that their grievances could be addressed at the proper forum.
