Pims emergency has registered 15 to 20 snakebite patients in July recorded increase in number during monsoon due to hot and humid weather. Most of the patients arrived in the emergency of Pims with complications like bleeding, respiratory difficulties, paralysis and renal or kidney failure said Dr Rizwan Qazi to a group of young doctors visiting Pims.
He said the response of anti-snake venom is excellent and advised that patients should come to the emergency as soon as possible after receiving snakebite.
The Executive Director, Pims, Dr Abdul Majid Rajput said Pims has provided free medical cure to these patients in the emergency and 1936 vials of anti-snake venom provided free of cost to these patients to save their lives during July 2007 to June 2008.
47 snakebite patients have been treated during this period. Eight patients were admitted to the surgical intensive care department in critical state were saved by giving artificial respiration through ventilators.
Six patients were admitted to the medical ward. Most patients with minor bites were treated in the emergency and were discharged after they became stable. Anti-snake venom give excellent result and patients recover fast provided they reach hospital in time.
