The Chairman, Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Senator Talha Mehmood has urged the government to fix the retiring age of the judges of higher judiciary at 70 and lower judiciary at 65. The Government should make legislation to increase the retiring age of the judges and all political parties should support the move, Mehmood told Business Recorder on Thursday.
'Maturity and mental stability grow with age and unfortunately when our judges reach that age, they use their capabilities for betterment of the nation, they are shown the door to exit,' he said. Further, he asked the government to fix the retiring age of District and Sessions Judges and other judges of lower judiciary at 65 in spite of 60.
'Judges will be given a handsome salary and peace of mind that could make them able to deliver to nation and dispense justice to the masses, he added. Mehmood praised the decision of Punjab government of increasing the salaries of the judges substantially asked other provinces and federal government to follow the suit.
Provision of justice to people is being considered as the baseline for the existence of nations and societies globally, Talha added. Judiciary has a great role in any nation's socio-economic uplift. If restricted, the nation would not attain the desired goals of economic stability and could not uproot the menace of corruption, he said, adding that if the Government is desirous to attain the socio-economic stability in the country, it should allow judiciary to work independently.
Furthermore, 'The toll of pending cases in courts is increasing day by day due to the shortage of judges and lack of proper facilities to them,' he said. Therefore, the Government should induct new judges in lower judiciary to assure quick dispensation of justice to the poor, the Senator said.
