The Supreme Court Thursday granted interim bail to Saeedullah Gondal, superintendent Adiala Jail, and his deputy, Khalid Mehmood, who were arrested on court directives for allegedly handing over 11 prisoners to intelligence agencies after their acquittal by an anti-terrorism court.
A four-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the bail application of former superintendent and deputy superintendent of Adiala jail, whose bail were cancelled by the Lahore High Court on February 2. Raja Muhammad Irshad, the counsel for the police officers, argued before the court that both officials had spent 37 days in jail due to their alleged involvement in disappearance of 11 acquitted prisoners from the premises of Adiala jail.
He said that the session court had granted them bail but later, Rawalpindi bench of the LHC cancelled their bail application. He requested the court to grant them bail as they had surrendered themselves before the court. After hearing his arguments, the court accepted interim bail of both police officers and directed them to submit the surety bonds of Rs 100, 000 each to additional registrar LHC within three days. The court, while issuing notice to complainant adjourned the hearing for confirmation of their bail till February 25.
