The Supreme Court (SC) was informed on Friday that the Punjab government had shifted Bank of Punjab loan defaulter Sheikh Afzal to Services hospital Lahore from jail. The court issued directives to Superintendent Services Hospital to provide medical treatment to the accused and report to the SC on the next date of hearing.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing Rs 9 billion Bank of Punjab loan case. The Chief Justice observed that it was the primary responsibility of the jail administration to provide treatment facility to the under-trial prisoner asking Additional Advocate General Punjab Jawwad Hassan to communicate to the concerned authorities to avoid blackmailing in the instant matter and provide medical facility to Afzal till his recovery.
During the course of hearing, the bench inquired from the Director Legal DHA as to why he declined to transfer the property of the owner of Haris Steel Mills, Sheikh Afzal, against the recovery of loan of the financial institution to a purchaser. Upon which, he assured the court that its order would be complied with by May 21. The court redirected Bank of Punjab and the NAB to settle the matter with the counsel for Sheikh Afzal mutually and adjourned the hearing to June 4.
