LAHORE: All Pakistan Sugar Mill Association Chairman Javed Kayani has urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to fix the price of sugar after taking its production cost into consideration.
"The sugar millers purchase sugarcane at the rate of Rs 65 while the production cost of sugar is Rs 72 per kg. Under these circumstances, it is not feasible for us to sell sugar at Rs 65 per kg," he said while addressing a press conference here on Friday.
He requested Prime Minister for a meeting to discuss the price issue and problems facing the sugar industry, and find a plausible way out that is acceptable to all. He said the government cannot supply sugar to the people by shutting down the industry.
"Our Association has been a victim of constant criticism and no one is willing to hear our side. Thus, we have decided to approach the media to put forth our point of view and clear our position on the matter. Our forum is not political, we are business people and we are under no political influence," he added.
Kayani urged the government to support the local sugar industry that employs hundreds of people. "We are ready to give our full support to the government and we are asking the government to resolve our problems," he added.
