Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Jade Jones of Great Britain had to settle for bronze on the final day of the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships Friday as Lee Ah-reum gave South Korea a fifth gold on home soil. In the city of Muju, 240 kilometres to the south of Seoul, Lee overcame Jones, the world number one, 14-8 in the semi-final of the women's Under-57 kg category.
It confirmed the host nation's dominance of the 23rd edition of this biennial tournament. Lee went on to defeat Hatice Ilgun of Turkey, second in the medal standings with two golds, 7-5 in the final. Zhao Shuai gave China a first gold in the tournament as he defeated Mirhashem Hosseini of Iran 11-5 in the final of the men's Under 63kg weight. Korea picked up a tenth medal in total in the women's Under-62kg class, as Kim So-hee took bronze. Ruth Gbagbi of the Ivory Coast won gold with a 19-9 victory over Kimia Alizadeh of Iran.
