A large number of women workers from various organisations took out a procession under the aegis of Working Women Organisation (WWO) on the occasion of May Day, to pay tributes to the Chicago martyrs.
The WWO President, Rubina Jamil, led the procession, which started from Lahore Press Club and terminated at GPO after passing Abott Road and Lakshmi Chowk. The processionists chanted slogans against the anti-labour amendments in Industrial Relations Ordinance (IRO).
They also condemned the price-hike, unemployment, and discrimination against women at work places, ban on trade union activities, deteriorating law and order situation, IMF and World Bank's anti public policies. WWO activists Aima Mahmood Reno Ahmad, Hifza Nisar, Parveen Ashiq. Salma Fayaz, Sajida Fareed and Salama Liaquat were also present on the occasion.
The office-bearers of WWO renewed their pledge to continue struggle for setting up of a society based on justice and equality. They stressed the need for strengthening alliance with the international labour community and evolving strategy for removal of discrimination between the male and female workers. "We must forge workers globalisation against the capitalists globalisation in the world," they added.
The women workers leaders also demanded of the government to enforce Industrial Relation Ord 1969 after repealing the anti-labour amendments in labour laws.
They also asked the government to check sexual harassment at the workplaces and ensure equal wages for male and female workers for the same work.
The government should also remove disparity amongst the rich and poor and ensure fair distribution of wealth, they demanded.
They further demanded of the government to fix minimum wages of workers at Rs 6,000 per month besides allowing union activities and right of collective barraging in all the organisations.
