'Trade Initiatives from Human Development Perspective' (TIHP) Project Steering Committee, in consultation with the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), has been constituted by the government of Pakistan.
The project, which has been initiated by the Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with UNDP, would be for a period of four years.
The key sectors/sub-sectors of the project are trade expansion, trade promotion and export development, and trade development.
The intended outcome of the project is to provide support to the Government of Pakistan (GOP) and other stakeholders, including private sector and workers, to ensure that the country can strategically seize the opportunities of global economic and trade integration for advancing national progress in human development and poverty eradication.
The two core objectives of the TIHP project are:
- (a) Provide inputs to the GOP through feedback from policy action research and stakeholders which will assist in domestic policy formulation on World Trade Organisation (WTO) issues; and
- (b) Build the capacity of GOP, academic institutions, research organisations and other civil society organisations to address trade related issues which have or could have implications for the poor and marginalised.
According to the implementation arrangements of the programme mentioned in the project document, a programme steering committee is to be established to ensure the participation of key stakeholders and address key policy issues.
The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has nominated FPCCI Vice-President and WTO Resource Centre Incharge Engr M A Jabbar to represent the private sector on the project steering committee.
Ministry of Commerce Secretary will be the Chairman of the Committee, which will include the following as members.
Representatives from Economic Affairs Division, Ministry of Labour and Manpower, CBR, National Tariff Commission, UNDP, Cost Sharing Donor, FPCCI, PIDE, WTO Watch Group, Economic Consultant and Ministry of Commerce/ TIHP National Project Director.
