One out of four middle aged adults in Karachi is heart patient, due to use of junk food, cholesterol and smoking beside adoption of urban life styles.
It was revealed in a pilot study conducted in different localities of Karachi on 400 people above 40 years by a group of Aga Khan University
(AKU) doctors, including Dr Tazeen Jafar, Dr Fahim Jafary, Dr Saleem Jessani and Dr Nish Chaturvedi.
Dr Tazeen Jafar, who is Associate Professor & Section Head, Nephrology and Director, Clinical Epidemiology Unit of AKU, talking to PPI, said that increase in use of junk food, samosas, sweets, Whey (lassee) and lack of exercise and walk came out as major factors in the prevalence of heart diseases.
"Women and men have equal risk but screening and treatment of women is essential as it is a neglected population," she said, adding, "some genes also create problems in coronary artery system."
She said that illiteracy was also contributing to diseases, as there was no awareness in people about common diseases.
She said that concerted efforts were needed to prevent the epidemic of CVD in Pakistan.
