At a very public place at a saint's shrine in Clifton, where lots of people come on holidays, my bag was stolen in broad daylight. I was standing only a few metres away.
There were mostly women in the area, yet the culprit was clever or professional enough to know of my ATM card and used it within half an hour of its disappearance to withdraw cash.
Later, I discovered that these incidents are very common at this place. Everyday women pickpockets are caught by the Awqaf. There are many that operate as part of gangs. They, of course, have the support of the police who allow them to operate.
The area is rife with drug addicts, elder as well as children, and all kinds of deranged beggars who are attracted by the free food and the chances of stealing and begging from the public, giving the shrine a bad image.
The police allow all this to flourish. Is there no one to keep a check? How can the authorities stand and do nothing?
