ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan announced on Wednesday that his party was set to launch a countrywide anti-corruption movement against the 'corrupt rulers' from August 7.
Speaking to media representatives here, he said the party will hold a protest demonstration in front of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) headquarters on July 25 which will be followed by the countrywide movement from August 7.
Khan said if the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif approves their Terms of Reference (ToRs) and form an inquiry committee to probe the Panama Papers revelations only then the campaign would stop.
Commenting over his recent controversial statement regarding Pakistanis would have distributed sweets in jubilation if a military coup had taken place in Pakistan instead of Turkey, the PTI chief said that his statement was wrongly presented.
“We have struggled for democracy for 20 years. No leader in Pakistan has put up this kind of struggle,” he said.
Lashing out at leadship qualities of the prime minister, Khan said Nawaz Sharif has not become a leader despite being elected as the premier three times in the past.
Answering a question regarding staging a sit-in outside the NAB headquarters in the federal capital on July 25, the PTI chairman said protest against the bureau was being carried out because the institution had failed to launch a probe against the government despite passage of three months when the Panama Papers issue first surfaced.
“Investigation were launched everywhere in the world where Panama Papers controversy had surfaced, but why NAB is not investigating Nawaz Sharif?” he questioned.
Leaked confidential documents spanning over nearly 40 years that spell out the extensive use of tax havens by politicians, world leaders, and celebrities to launder money and evade taxes through one of the most secretive companies the Panamaian law firm Mossack Fonseca, had taken the world by storm.
Many Pakistanis had also been named in their revelations.
Prime Minister Sharif has been under pressure since documents released as part of the Panama Papers data leak showed his children – Hassan, Hussain and Maryam Nawaz – owned several off-shore companies and used them to buy properties in London.
