US stocks fell Tuesday as earnings season began on a weak note with a sales warning from chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc hurting the chip sector and lower-than-expected earnings from aluminium producer Alcoa Inc. The Standard & Poor's index of steel companies slid 3.9 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 80.25 points, or 0.76 percent, at 10,540.45. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 8.28 points, or 0.70 percent, at 1,181.97. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was down 23.49 points, or 1.12 percent, at 2,073.55.
The Standard & Poor's index and the Dow Jones industrial average hit their lowest intraday levels in more than four weeks.
