The government will established two modern laboratories at a cost of Rs 321 million for strengthening of Grain Quality Testing to ensure good qualities of exportable agriculture produce. According to official sources, an amount of Rs 198 million, with foreign aid of Rs 123 million, will be spent on setting up two modern laboratories. Two Grain Quality testing laboratories; one at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Islamabad, and the other at Tropical Agricultural Research Centre (TARC), at Karachi.
Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) has initiated work on the project at an estimated cost of Rs 198.53 million under Strengthening of Grain Quality Testing programme.
Presently, the NARC and TARC grain quality testing labs are providing quality tests such as moisture content, foreign matter, damaged kernels, shrunken and broken kernels, thousand grain mass, presence of insects, kernel bunt, pesticide residues, protein, gluten test, falling number, drought properties and baking tests apart from providing fumigation service to the wheat lots exported by the food department.
For strengthening animal and plant quarantine facilities improvement of handling facilities to assure quality of fish and fisheries products are also being made.
Efforts are being made to replace low yielding crop varieties with high yielding crop varieties so that capacity of soil may be exploited properly. Besides, construction of new markets in poor areas and dissemination of marketing information, setting up of clearing houses and grading of Waxing and Packing are also underway to streamline the system for yielding good export oriented results.
The government is also paying attention to remove these imperfections through removing marketing imperfection, which is a major obstacle in promotion of productivity and production of crops.
