Central leaders of Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) Professor Manzoor Hussain Chishti, Professor Syed Riaz Ahsan, Professor Muhammad Mashooq Baloch, Professor Muharram Ali Kalhoro, Professor Khadim Khoso, Professor Athar Mirza, Professor Muneebur Rehman and Professor Shafqat Jokhio, in their joint statement issued here on Sunday, have accused some officials of the provincial education departments of "taking bribe".
They alleged that according to what they called a "confirmed information" the clerks and other staff of a relevant section are "extorting Rs 10,000 per head from the newly appointed lecturers on Ad-hoc basis or through the public service commission for their postings".
Expressing their surprise over what they called a "mysterious silence" of the top brass and other responsible senior officers of the department over this bribery issue, they alleged that the corrupt officials had "earned" Rs 5 to 6 million bribe under this "posting" head.
They appealed to the Sindh Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary to take notice of this sensitive issue and form a high-powered probe committee to conduct an inquiry into matter, so that the newly appointed lecturers could be saved from this extortion and those responsible could be taken to the task. They also demanded that the money extorted from the newly appointed lecturers be returned back to them.
