US Ambassador to Pakistan Ryan C Crocker called on the Chief Justice-designate Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry here on Thursday and felicitated him on his elevation. Supreme Court registrar Budha Khan described the meeting as a "courtesy call" by the envoy.
President of Pakistan has appointed the senior most judge of the Supreme Court Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as Chief Justice of Pakistan who is due to take over the top judicial office on June 30. President General Pervez Musharraf will take oath from the new chief justice at a ceremony to be held at Aiwan-e-Sadr.
The outgoing Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui is retiring on June 29 on the expiry of his tenure.
The new chief justice served as judge of Balochistan High Court from November 06, 1990 to April 21, 1999 and as Chief Justice of the said High Court from April 22, 1999 to February 03, 2000. He was appointed judge of the Supreme Court on February 04, 2000.
