Anjuman Kashtkaran Punjab, (AKP) Pakistan Farmers Advisory Forum (PFAF) and Pakistan Kissan Committee (PKC) alleged that National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had provided a shelter to the black marketers, hoarders, profiteers and those elements who were responsible for the current sugar crisis here on Tuesday that the rulers and the sugar mills' mafia had created the sugar crisis to earn more profits.
The measures taken by the government had deepened the sugar crisis instead of controlling the sugar prices in the open market and consumers could not get any relief, as hoarders were not releasing sugar from their godowns, these organisations said.
Abdul Ali Zakir Usmani President of AKP, Khuda Bakhsh of PFAF and Mehfooz Khan Shujaat of PKC alleged that the sugar crisis would continue till the government came out with a comprehensive plan to boost up sugarcane production through grower-friendly policies.
They criticised the government for issuing licences to set up two more sugar mills in a cotton-growing area of Rahimyar Khan. They suggested the sugar mills should be set up at barren lands particularly in waterlogged and salined areas of Southern Punjab and not to waste the cotton area otherwise Textile Millers would have to import cotton from different countries by spending precious foreign exchange. They said agriculture sector was going through worse times due to "Anti-agriculture policies" of the government.
