Pakistan Masihi Awami League (PMAL) Chairperson Catherine Nazir said on Monday that they would join hands with those political parties, which would ensure due representation to Christians in national and provincial assemblies and Senate to induct them in main stream of politics.
Delivering a presidential address at Christian councillors consultation meeting, which was attended by more than 300 people, she said that rights of minorities were ever usurped by the ruling parties and their youths were still jobless in spite of attaining higher education.
She further said that Christian community was serving the majority Muslims in better way by establishing educational institutions and hospitals to alleviate their miseries and pains.
City District Nazim Mian Faisal Mukhtar said that President General Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had given due representation to minorities in all institutions from union councils to National Assembly and they were endeavouring for uplifting their living standard.
He said that Christians should not join hands with such political parties, which had betrayed them in past and they should strengthen the hands of General Pervez Musharraf.
Barrister Asghar Hayat Hiraj, Nazim of Kabirwala assured them of full co-operation and said that the Christians had lit a candle of education in Khanewal district and his family got education from the missionary educational institutions.
Dr Maqsood Masih, member district assembly Sahiwal said that there were more than 0.1 million registered Christian voters in south Punjab but they could not get elected even a single MNA from this area.
Ayyub Shahid, Habibullah Niazi, Fazal Feroz, Maria Javed, Abid Naveed, Iqbal Peter, Afzal Khurshid, A Braham and Amanuel also spoke on the occasion.
