Skill Development Center (SDC) being set up by Technology Upgradation and Skill Development Company (Tusdec) in Batagram town of NWFP will become operational early next year.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz performed the groundbreaking of this project in August last. According to a spokesman of Tusdec, here on Friday, most of the foundation work for various blocks of the complex had been completed in line with the 'earthquake-resistant' building plan approved by Erra.
He said that erection of the pre-fabricated steel structures had started. An agreement for supply of the center's furniture had been signed with M/s Circle International at a cost of Rs 1.69 million. Procurement of machinery required for teaching skills like shuttering, carpentry, construction and hospitality is in progress, he added.
Tusdec will set-up a total of eight centers in earthquake-affected areas of NWFP and AJK to train approximately 4140 victims per year in earthquake-resistant construction techniques, furniture-making skills, hospitality proficiency and tourism development expertise.
A Tusdec survey conducted immediately after the October 8, 2005 disaster reveals the need of raising skill level of the affected people so that they could be rehabilitated in economic terms. This significant initiative is being carried out at the behest and under the supervision of Federal Minister for Industries, Production & Special Initiatives, Jahangir Khan Tareen.
The project has been funded by Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), the parent organisation of Tusdec, which has committed Rs 200 million for eight centers at four locations in NWFP and AJK.
