Top tax officials in Karachi are again trying their level best to get physical remand of the main culprit of the multimillion GST scam, Raja Zaraat, to assist the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in carrying out proper investigation against the officials involved in the mega scam.
Information collected by this scribe on Sunday showed that senior tax officials of the Enforcement Collectorate have again approached the Special Judge, Customs and Taxation, Karachi, for getting permission to produce the accused before the court.
The investigation officials of the Collectorate, Sales Tax, Enforcement, again submitted an application for physical remand of accused Muhammad Zaraat before trial court on December 2, 2006. The Special Judge, Customs and Taxation, Karachi, directed the jail authorities to produce the accused before the court.
Sources said that the Superintendent, Central Prison, informed the tax authorities that Zaraart was admitted in the National Medical Centre, Karachi, for medical treatment and, therefore, the hospital should be approached.
Accordingly, the tax officials approached the hospital authorities. The doctor treating the accused informed that the accused needed "strict monitoring and bed rest, and due to his present condition he may take time to settle. We will let you know when the condition is satisfactory for transportation".
Sources said that CBR has obtained, from the relevant offices, the list of officers posted in Sales Tax and Customs Collectorates, Karachi.
