Kazakhstan's Agriculture Ministry raised its grain export forecast to 9.0 million tonnes on Monday from a previous estimate of 7.5-8.0 million tonnes for the 2007-2008 marketing year.
Kazakhstan is aiming to become one of the world's top five-grain exporters as it considers doubling the area sown to grain to 26 million hectares within seven to 10 years.
"The export potential will likely reach about 9 million tonnes," minister Akhmetzhan Yesimov told a government meeting. Kazakhstan, Central Asia's top grain producer, has raised its forecast for this year's clean weight grain crop to 16.1 million tonnes from a previous forecast of 14.5 million tonnes. Russian Azimov, president of the state-owned Food Contract Corporation, said last week this year's grain crop was likely to exceed last year's and lead to higher exports.
