Former Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Pakistan, Justice Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui(Retd) says progress and development could not be hindered in such a society where educational institutes and the courts worked in a right direction.
He was addressing a reception organised last night in honour of passing out students and newcomers of the Criminology Department at University of Karachi premises.
Justice Saeeudzzaman underscored the need to strengthen these two departments to form a progressive, developed society. In his address, Dean, Faculty of Arts, KU, Dr Mohammad Shamsuddin, praised students' interest in the criminology studies at a time when its demand was gaining more importance.
Noting that a few percent of total population in country could get university level education, he urged the students to fully benefit from these opportunities and utilise them serving the people and country.
Chairman Criminology Department, Dr Fateh Mohammad Burfat informed the participants that University of Karachi was the first in country, where masters' level studies in criminology was started with co-operation of Sindh Police in 1996. Today, stress was being laid on these studies across the country, which showed its importance, he added.
Additional IG Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui said studies on criminology create awareness among students about strategies to prevent crime and the psychological aspect of criminals. He commented he was proud to be affiliated with the department of criminology and to see interest of students in this kind of education.
Sindh IG Prisons, Mohammad Yamin Khan, in his speech highlighted various aspects of these studies to curb anti-social tendencies and dealing with those involved in them.
Sindh Prosecutor General, Dr Rana Shamim threw light on background of the law and crimes. Noted columnist Colonel Mukhtar Butt (Retd), teachers and students of criminology, population sciences departments also spoke. Later, Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui gave away shields and prizes to final year students.
