The AJK government has reserved the site comprising 2600 kanal of land in Mirpur for the construction of a engineering university with the financial assistance of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, official sources said and added that it would be the first of its own kind in AJK.
The sources told APP here late on Wednesday that the site for the proposed project has been reserved at village Sehens, close to Mirpur city. AJK President Raja Zulqarnain Khan, who is also the Chancellor of University of Azad Jammu Kashmir, had recently formed a three- member committee for the site selection.
The site was approved by a high level selection committee comprising Commissioner Mirpur division, Dean of the state-run Ali Ahmed Shah College of Engineering & Technology Mirpur Commissioner Mangla Dam Affairs and Professor Khalid Masood of the Mirpur Engineering College visited the site and approved it at Sehens village near Khaliqabad in outskirts of Mirpur for the gigantic project.
The AJK government formally accorded approval for allotment of 2600 kanal of land free of cost for the Engineering University project, to be first of its own kind in the liberated territory.
It may be recalled that during his visit to Azad Jammu Kashmir, Prime Minister Shoukat Aziz had accepted the proposal for emergence of a full fledged Engineering University in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir and accorded approval of the project by elevating the status of the existing state-run University College in the city.
It may be added that Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has already allocated funds of Rs 30 million for the construction of Engineering University in Mirpur, according to the official sources.
