The Punjab Transport Department (PTD) has so far registered 37 manufacturers of 4-storke CNG rickshaw and placed them on the loaning panel of the Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC).
The PSIC Project Director (CNG Green Rickshaw Loaning Scheme) Malik Pervaiz Azmat revealed this while talking to a delegation of Pakistan Auto Rickshaw Manufacturers Association (Parma) headed by its chairman Asif Rehan Dar here on Wednesday.
He briefed the members about the problems faced by the borrowers of the scheme regarding poor quality production of CNG Auto Rickshaws. He floated an idea of CNG Club, which could be a broader base for the manufacturers as well as private entrepreneurs for loaning facilities.
On complaints by the members that the regional offices are delaying the disbursement of their finances the Project Director promised that such grievances (as and when brought into his notice) are addressed without fail and doors are always open for due remedy.
Speaking on the occasion, the association chairman Asif Rehan Dar stressed the need for lifting ban on running 4-stroke CNG Auto Rickshaw on VIP roads in the city. He also pointed out that DCO Lahore has banned the 4-stroke CNG Auto Rickshaw (environment friendly and polluted free) on the important roads like Mall Road, Jail Road, Walton and Defence Road despite the ruling of the Lahore High Court with regard to banning of 2-stroke Auto Rickshaw. He urged the government to withdraw the DCO orders in this regard immediately.
He said that Pakistani 4-stroke CNG Auto Rickshaw has captured the markets of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and African countries and is also competing the Indian Bajaj Rickshaw.
It was pointed out that the import of CNG Kit is subject to import duty and sales tax. That's why the price of Auto Rickshaw has gone beyond the reach of a common man whereas the CNG Buses have been exempted from duty as well as sales tax. It was therefore resolved to take up the matter by the Parma with the Federal Board of Revenue for exemption of duty on the import of CNG Kit and withdrawal of sales tax. Dar also floated an idea of holding of a three-day seminar-cum-exhibition of 4-Stroke CNG Auto Rickshaws in Minar-e-Pakistan or Race Course Park.
