A local stage-dramas producer Zaheer Hussain Adil has filed an intra-court appeal against a Lahore High Court (LHC) single member bench's decision of banning dance performance in theatres, declaring dances an un-Islamic act. Petitioner-producer has challenged the Punjab Council of Arts Act, not allowing the script of petitioner's stage drama with songs and dances.
Petitioner through his counsel Imran Aziz Khan pleaded that the November 12, judgement of the single bench is in conflict with the earlier judgements of the high court that clearly stated that songs and dances in theatrical performances could not be banned outrightly.
Petitioner stated that appeals of government against such permission given by the high court were also dismissed in the year 2003. He submitted that the impugned notification is capricious and is against the law laid down by the LHC in a writ petition decided in the year 2003. Petitioner therefore prayed to the court to set aside the LHC single bench order and the impugned notification also be set aside as being without lawful authority and of no legal effect.
