World Wide Funds for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) delegation had a meeting with the Director General Punjab Rangers General Muhammad Yaqub Khan at the Rangers Headquarters. According to a WWF-P's spokesman here on Thursday, this meeting discussed the joint efforts to conserve wildlife species in the border areas of the Punjab province by selecting high priority sites.
The WWF-P appreciated the strict ban on hunting imposed by the Punjab Rangers. The Punjab Rangers recently apprehended senior government officials who were engaged in illegal hunting in the area. The implementation of law by the Rangers proves that no one is above the law.
Detailed wildlife surveys have not been conducted in the border areas, therefore the hunting ban by the Punjab Rangers is appropriate and timely to protect the declining species in the border areas, such as hog deer, nilgai, partridges, etc.
Both institutions agreed to explore further avenues for conservation of nature and wildlife in the border belt, and meet regularly to discuss the same. The WWF-P is one of the largest environmental conservation organisations in the country and is part of a global network.
