The government has earmarked Rs 7 billion for the Interior Division under the next fiscal year's Public Sector Development Programme (2012-13) for various ongoing projects, including one titled 'Safe City Islamabad'. Of the total allocation, the government approved Rs 5 billion for the Safe City Islamabad project. According to PSDP documents, the government intends to borrow foreign loans of about Rs 5 billion for the projects,.
Ongoing projects included the construction of family quarters for security officials in various cities, construction of check posts, construction of police parade ground in Islamabad, development sachems in rural areas of the city. An official said that under the Safe City project, an effective electronic system would be installed at police check-posts, FIR system would be computerised and capacity-building of police would be undertaken.
Under the project, emergency command centres would be established to handle terror- and calamity-related incidents with a centralised control room and an effective surveillance system to monitor the movement of unauthorised vehicles. Similarly, gates would be built at entry and exit points in the Red Zone along with the installation of CCTV cameras.
In the previous year's budget (2011-2012), the government had allocated Rs 5.8 billion for the Interior Division under the PSDP. Of the total, Rs 4.5 billion were allocated for ongoing projects and Rs 1.24 billion for new projects. The government had borrowed foreign loans worth Rs 51 million loans for these projects.
