The Sindh government is ready to provide relief and rehabilitation to people hit by natural calamities such as heavy rains or super floods, Advisor to Chief Minister for Relief Department Haleem Adil Shaikh said on Saturday. He was speaking at a dinner hosted by the provincial relief department for diplomats, representatives of international NGOs and representatives of the civil society.
Urging international humanitarian agencies, donors and philanthropists to support "our people who had been badly hit by natural disasters". He said that the Sindh government was ready to assist foreigners, besides providing security in calamity-hit areas.
Consul-Generals of many countries participated in the event. Stressing the need for preparing to avert a disaster in upcoming monsoon season this year, he said that this event had been arranged to share the extent of devastation caused by rains and floods in 2010 and 2011. Ayub Mari, the Additional Commissioner, relief, said that after becoming a separate department in September 2011, his department had worked hard to rebuild the people's lives ruined by heavy rains.
He added that his department was planning to set up Disaster Risk Reduction Centres in every district to minimise the risk of calamities in future and to provide rapid relief to people in vulnerable areas.
