The legal fraternity on Saturday observed a 'black day' to mark the fifth anniversary of May 12 carnage and paid homage to the victims of the movement for restoring an independent judiciary. On May 12, 2007, around 45 people who had gone to welcome the then non-functional Chief Justice in Karachi were shot dead by terrorists mainly on Sharea Faisal.
Lawyers called for launching an in-depth investigation into the killings. The Sindh Bar Council (SBC), Karachi Bar Association (KBA), Malir Bar Association and other associations of lawyers observed the day to remember the victims of May 12. Lawyers also organised gatherings across the city. Members of the SBC denounced the killing of innocent people in Karachi five years ago during the Musharraf regime in 2007.
Lawyers boycotted court proceedings and attended mourning references organised by various bar associations. Black flags were hoisted atop court buildings and bar offices. The legal fraternity has termed the May 12 bloodshed a "black day" in Pakistan's history.
