The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has established independent bodies namely Councils of Complaints at federal and provincial capitals to redress public complaints regarding programmes telecast by television channels.
An official of Pemra told APP on Monday that any one aggrieved by any programme of a TV channel can lodge a complaint with the nearest Council of Complaints, which after considering the matter, may recommend to the authority an appropriate action against the defaulter, including censure, fine or revocation of the licence.
Replying to a question, he said the Pemra had been monitoring the contents of broadcast as per Code of Conduct. To be more specific and objective, a draft of Content Regulations, which also contains specific clauses to discourage obscenity and vulgarity, has been prepared which is currently being deliberated upon by the stakeholders, he added.
He said the Content Regulations have been prepared in consultation with the public, intellectuals and members of civil society, which would help define boundaries/restrictions for the telecasting content. The draft is available on Pemra's official website (www.pemra.gov.pk).
