The concerned officials of the Federal government have been directed to take necessary measures to control measles in the country. According to official sources, the government will also ensure support to the provincial governments for control of measles in Balochistan and FATA. They said that there was an outbreak situation of measles in FATA with five children admitted to a Miramshah Hospital in critical condition.
They said Balochistan had so far recorded over 600 cases of the disease in eight districts with 740 cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 380 cases in Punjab. The sources said that the government had redoubled its efforts in strengthening all health programmes with a view to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015. They added the government would ask the World Health Organisation to support the provinces in improving monitoring of the key health programmes, including the Expanded Programme on Immunisation. They said that 90 percent of the FATA region is now accessible to all vaccination teams, including both routine vaccination and polio.
