The Academic Staff Association of Government College University (ASA GCU) Lahore has requested the Punjab government to refrain from halting the development of public sector universities by cutting down funds and snatching their autonomy. GCU ASA President Professor Dr Hassan Amir Shah said that there is a massive cut in the funding of public sector universities especially by the Punjab government and now the involvement of education department in decision of universities would worsen the situation.
He said that the Punjab government allocated Rs 125 million to GCU in the current financial year, but only Rs 17 million were released. Professor Hassan A. Shah called on the Punjab Chief Minister to intervene in the matter, hoping that "the chief minister is an educationally friendly person and understands the importance of autonomy of educational institutions." He further stressed the proposed amendments in the ordinances of public sector universities should be uniformed and according to the 1973 Constitution and there should be no compromise on the autonomy of universities and in fact they should be further empowered to create new departments and centers of research.
