The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, has expressed deep concern over the targeted killing of lawyers and said that it is the duty of state to protect life, property, dignity and honour of the citizens under the constitution.
According to a press release of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the CJP said this while talking to the representatives of different bar associations including Sindh Bar Council and Bar Associations of Malir, Kotri, Nawabshah, Hyderabad and Sanghar at call on meetings at Supreme Court branch registry, Karachi on Thursday.
The CJP condemned the incidents of target killing and expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Sindh in particular where lawyers and judges were not safe and specific persons were being targeted which shows that the law enforcement agencies were not discharging their functions properly. He said "security and safely of every one lies in rule of law and there is complete freedom of expression of speech and opinion."
The Chief Justice admired the role of legal fraternity in lawyers' movement in which they stood firm and struggled hard to bring rule of law in the society through peaceful efforts. He added that the movement was supported by the civil society because it was the struggle for the principles. Moreover, the Chief Justice offered Fatiha on sad demise of Ali Muhammad Dahri, Mazhar Arian, Reheem Bux Jamali Advocates, who belonged to different parts of the Sindh province and prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in eternal peace and tranquillity and give courage and patience to the members of the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss.
The members of the bars appreciated the CJP's struggle and efforts for the rule of law which was unique in the global history. They reposed their trust and confidence in the leadership of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. They also discussed with the Chief Justice, issues related to legal/judicial fraternities. They expressed the hope that the administration of justice under the leadership of CJP will continue to deliver inexpensive and expeditious justice to the litigant public. They said that the public have reposed great confidence in the judiciary.
