Six leading hockey teams of the country are taking part in the First Women's Challenge Cup Hockey Tournament being played here at the National Hockey Stadium from December 30. Teams which have confirmed their participation in the tournament, which will be played on single league basis till January 6, are Sindh, Punjab, Railways, WAPDA, Army and Balochistan.
Chief Organiser of the tournament Saman Rashid told reporters here at the National Hockey Stadium that she had gone on an assignment given to Singapore by the Asian Hockey Federation on the recommendations of the Pakistan Hockey Federation. She said that Pakistan Hockey Federation has already accorded approval to the tournament which is being organised a group of enthusiastic former hockey players in the private sector in order to promote national game among womenfolk and to encourage young girls to take to playing hockey by watching leading women players in action in the tournament which is being played with the slogan of Strength, Courage and Achievement.
She said that schedule of the matches to be played in the tournament is being finalised in consultations with the participating teams. She said that entry will be free for families, students of the schools, colleges and universities and there will be on the spot quiz and instant prizes every day.
