SU student to attend 8th Asian Science Camp in Singapore

A final year student of B.S Physics University of Sindh (SU) Jamshoro Sarah Ahmed Soomro among eight other Pakistani students has been selected to represent the country in the 8th Asian Science Camp (ASC) with Nobel Laureates and eminent Scientists, Singapore which will be held from August 24 to 29, 2014. The Pakistani delegation comprising eight students will represent the country in the Science Camp. This Camp will provide the delegation with opportunities to meet students from all over Asia and share ideas with one another.
The Nobel Prize holders in physics, chemistry and medicine will be the key speakers in the 8th Asian Science Camp. In this regard, a ceremony was held at Vice-Chancellor's office on Thursday wherein the university high-ups congratulated Sarah Ahmed Soomro for her selection. Talking on the occasion, Sarah Ahmed Soomro expressed pleasure and said she was the only student participating from the Sindh province adding that ASC had held an essay competition among selected students and she won it and became able to get the travel fellowship as well.
It may be noted that the ASC is an annual forum which aims to enlighten those science-talented youths through discussion and dialogue with top scholars in the world and to promote the international friendship and co-operation among the best young students of the next generation in Asia.
The participating students are those selected from various universities who show keen interest and promise in science. According to the Director of Collaborations & Academic Activities Department (CAAD) National Centre for Physics, QAU Campus, Islamabad Dr Riffat Mahmood Qureshi, the idea of ASC was first mooted in 2005 after the Lindau Science Meeting by Professor Yuan-Tseh Lee, the 1986 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, and Professor Masatoshi Koshiba, the 2002 Nobel Laureate in Physics modelled after the Lindau Science Meeting which has been held in Germany for more than half a century.
He told that the ASC provided a platform for dialogue and discussion between promising young talents and invited Nobel Laureates and Eminent Scientists. It also helped to develop international friendships and co-operation among Asian young scientists of the next generation.
The ASC-2014 will be organised by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) at Nanyang Technological University with strong support from the Lee Foundation, the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation, Singapore. This year the program will be held at The Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from 24th to 29th August, 2014 wherein SU female student among eight other Pakistani students will participate in the camp.
