Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan on Thursday challenged the government to name the allegedly conspirators against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and asked whether it is judiciary or the military. Speaking at a press conference here, he said that threats to the joint investigation team (JIT) probing offshore assets of Sharif family by the leaders are threats to the Supreme Court.
He said that the prime minister lied on the floor of the National Assembly during his briefing to the House on his financial assets. "He [Nawaz Sharif] was showing the papers to us that these are details of his assets, but he [Premier] had nothing when it was time to submit the evidence before the apex court", he added.
In the apex court, PM Sharif's counsel presented a previously unknown Qatari letter, he said, adding there were no documents presented in the court that he waved in the National Assembly. He alleged that the PML-N tried to buy the JIT members and started attacking them when the offer was refused. Khan said the Sharif family will have to give answers to two simple questions: who is the owner of the properties and how was the money taken out of Pakistan.
Imran said those who claim to be protecting democracy are in fact destroying national institutions to protect their corruption, adding that they have not shown money trail yet. Taking further jibe at the government, he said that the PML-N leaders have coined a new term 'judicial coup.' "I am challenging them, the entire nation is standing with the Supreme Court. The nation is waiting for my one call and then you'll see a sea of people all over the country," he added.
He added that the PTI has nothing to do with the JIT summons of Maryam Nawaz Sharif, adding it is he (prime minister) due to whom his children are facing interrogation because he concealed his foreign assets. Referring to an allegation against him, Imran said the foreign funding case against him is 'politically motivated one.' Criticising the incumbent leadership further, Khan said if the Qatari prince can come to Pakistan to buy Port Qasim and hunt houbara bustard, why he can't come to the country to appear before the JIT.
"Even if he doesn't appear before JIT, he can send the banking transactions, like Jemima sent all the bank transaction," he said. About the PML-N's anger that women should not have been dragged to the JIT, he said that this very PML-N has no idea how to respect women, and these are the people who accused Jemima of being a Zionist despite knowing she had embraced Islam. He said that anywhere in the world leaders whose names surfaced in Panama Papers presented themselves for accountability, but Nawaz Sharif is the only leader who is neither ready to give details of his assets nor is ready to resign.
He also called upon Maryam Nawaz Sharif to stop shedding 'crocodile tears' on the pretext of democracy, saying the only way to strengthen the teething democracy is to make the corrupt ruling elite accountable for their corruption.
