Vegetables and fruits prices have started increasing and likely to increase more in couple of days due to short supply. According to traders the supply of vegetables had reduced drastically from upcountry due to heavy rain. Vegetable sellers are expecting more increase in the prices as more rain is expected and there will be shortage of supply. Dealers said that due to rains in most parts of the country roads were badly affected, causing transportation problems hampering supply of fruits and vegetables which have pushed the prices up.
During a visit to the fruit and vegetable market, it was found that potatoes were on top of the rate chart with most popular fruit mango. Earlier, potatoes were available for Rs 20 per kg but now are being sold at Rs 40 per kg. Cucumber, which was available at Rs 30 per kg, is being available at Rs 50 per kg. Cauliflower prices rose from Rs 50 to Rs 90 and spinach from Rs 30 to 50.
The prices of all vegetables, including seasonal and off-season, have increased by Rs 10 to 30. Earlier, mangoes were available at Rs 100 to 120 per kg but now being sold at Rs 150 to Rs 200 per kg. Prices of apple are Rs 180 to 200 per kg against Rs 150 per kg last month. Similarly, the prices of all fruits, including seasonal and off-season, have increased by Rs 20 to 50. Consumers said the government should take immediate steps to check the rising prices.
