The tally of Covid-19 patients crossed 716 in the federal capital and it may further surge to an alarming level in the next few weeks, if public do not practice social distancing.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat through his twitter account said that the lockdown had almost been lifted.

The trend of increase in the disease spread is getting dangerous. If we do not practice social distancing in the next few weeks, I am afraid Eid won't be a day of happiness, he said, adding that out of total 716 coronavirus patients 12 are on ventilator.

Assistant Commissioner Gohar Zaman told Business Recorder about violation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) devised for control of the spread of the coronavirus in various markets that traders and the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce during a meeting a meeting with DC had given them assurance about implementation of the SOPs.

If the traders failed to ensure implementation of the SOPs in a day or two, the administration will have no option but again impose lockdown, he said.

Zaman said that local traders' union and Corona Tiger Force would jointly ensure implementation of the SOPs.

The SOPs will also allow the administration to seal entire marakiz, markets or commercial and shopping centres, if violations are observed there, he said.

Zaman said that the traders' associations had made agreement for implementation of the SOPs and the Tiger Force would be used to inspect sites and help enforce social distancing measures.

Under the SOPs, wearing of face mask and use of hand sanitisers are mandatory as well as checking of temperature of employees in the shop, he said, adding that it also included keeping a six-feet distance among shops' employees and clients.
