Polsana cruises into second round of Thai Open

31 Mar, 2005

Defending local champion Boonsak Polsana booked his place Wednesday in the second round on the opening day of the 80,000-dollar Thailand Open badminton tournament. The eighth seed, who became the tournament's second Thai champion with his victory last year, took 30 minutes to overcome Keishi Kawanguchi of Japan, 15-10, 15-7. Boonsak, who last year reached the semi-finals of the Olympic men's singles, will meet another Japanese, Shinya Ohtsuka, in the second round. Ohtsuka beat Vietnamese qualifier Hoang Hai Nguyen, 15-4, 15-1.
World number four and the tournament's first seed, Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark, won his opening match against Thai qualifier, Jaturong Butrbhodi, 15-10, 15-2
Second seed Xia Xuanze of China took only half an hour to defeat Filipino Kennevic Asuncion, 15-4, 15-7, while China's Yi Lu saw off a strong challenge from Taiwan's Feng Chin Chang to win 15-11, 13-15, 17-14.
Marc Zwiebler from Germany was the tournament's only seeded player to lose in the first round. He was surprisingly outgunned by Jung Woon Hwang of South Korea in three sets, 15-2, 5-15, 15-9.
Second round matches start late Wednesday.
