Senate polls: LHC hearing put off

09 Dec, 2006

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday adjourned till December 13, the proceedings in a petition filed by PPPP candidate Dr Israr Shah in recent Senate election praying to the court to restore his main petition against Senator Haroon Akhtar, dismissed due to non-prosecution basis.
The petitioner contended that his main petition was adjourned till October 28 but in the meantime LHC office fixed the petition on October 21. The respondent officials did not inform the petitioner in time and the petition was dismissed on non-prosecution basis.
The petitioner, therefore, prayed to the court to restore his main petition enabling him to contest it in accordance with the law. The petitioner counsel was still submitting his submissions when the court rose for the day.
The petitioner had challenged the election of the respondent Haroon Akhtar as Senator with contention that he did not fulfil the condition of technocrats.
He, therefore, prayed to the court to declare his election as null and void and also direct the Election Commission to hold fresh elections on the said seat.
