Sindh achieves water courses improvement target

Sindh has achieved the target for pacca lining of 5,740 water courses under the national program for improvement of water courses for 2006-07. The program was initiated in 2004-05 with the financial assistance of federal government.
During the first year of its start, 240 water courses were improved in Sindh and in 2005-06 improvement work was accelerated and 5071 water courses were improved against the target of 5000 fixed by the government.
Engr Zafarullah Durrani, Director-General AE&WM Sindh said that out of 44,858 water courses of Sindh 18,627 water courses had been pacca lined, out of which 7576 were pacca lined under previous OFWM project, started in 1977, whereas 11,051 water courses have been completed in 2005 to 2007.
The DG AW&WM said that Sindh had taken lead to introduce modern irrigation technologies ie drip, sprinkler bubbler systems. The growers had shown great interest for installation of these systems on their lands. He said that Sindh is facing shortage of water for agriculture, industrial and domestic use. It is believed that after improvement/pacca lining of water courses more than 30 percent water would be saved.
