President-elect Barack Obama assured Afghan leader Hamid Karzai that the United States would increase support for his country, a presidential statement said Sunday. Obama, who will take office in January, called Karzai Saturday night, emphasising that the "war on terror" and the issue of Afghanistan's security would be priorities in his administration, the statement added.
"America is committed to assisting the Afghan government and people for ensuring peace and stability, and will increase its assistance in this regard," the statement from Karzai's office said, citing the conversation he had with Obama.
"The president-elect said war on terrorism and security in Afghanistan (were part) of his priorities and he assured of further co-operation to the government and people of Afghanistan," the statement added.
