The Lahore High Court while adjourning a petition against the government for taking action against Sheesha cafes to July 11, directed the petitioners' counsel and the law officer to come up with arguments on a point whether "law pertaining to prohibition of smoking on public place is applicable to cafes and restaurants providing Sheesha facilities.
This law point came under discussion after Provincial Law Officer told the court that smoking is banned on public places under Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-smokers Health Ordinance 2002. He said Sheesha cafes could not be allowed to provide this facility.
Sheesha cafes' owners said the government was taking coercive measures against the cafes after putting a ban on the use of Sheesha. Petitioners said later the government also declared Sheesha a prohibited product. They argued that use of Sheesha was not harmful for health nor it was prohibited product.
